    LIFE-SAVING BOOKS
I had forgotten to blog this when a colleague of mine pointed it out to me -- and how I could have skipped it is beyond me!
There was a story in March about a boy who had gone hiking & camping with his scout troop in North Carolina. Feeling a little homesick, he decided he didn't want to camp and wandered away from the site hoping to hitchhike home. He didn't quite make it. Instead he ended up lost in the wilderness, alone on a cold night. When searches finally found him a few days later, he was OK -- and attributed part of his survival success to one of his favourite books: Hatchet by Gary Paulsen.
You never know... but reading just might save your life!

    Other possibly important books:
    Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
    Far North by Will Hobbs
Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook by Joshua Piven
Action Hero's Handbook by David Borgenicht
Stones in Water by Donna Jo Napoli
    Teens 911 by Deborah Morris
Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson
Come Back Alive by Robert Young Pelton
Swiss Family Robinson by Johann Wyss

    Comments:
Swiss Family Robinson was a fun read. It really captured the "stuck on an uninhabited island for years on end" kind of adventure. Which reminds me of the movie Castaway, starring none other than Tom Hanks. He also starred in the classic romance You've Got Mail. Which reminds me of the book The Scarlet Letter, which is apparently a good novel to consider using for free response questions on AP Lit exams. Bummer.
