Barefoot Serpent by Scott Morse
This is a mood piece, telling two stories that loosely relate only when the reader is familiar with the filmography of Akira Kurosawa. Nevertheless, from one who is not, the book is lovely. The front- and back- matter contain curt biographical material of the artist/director Akira; the middle is an entirely different different story about a family who has lost a son/brother. Set in the Hawaiian islands, complete with dialect and superstitions (that are more truth than not), this is a simple story about the power of family and hope and memory.
